To most people bereavement refers to the death of a loved one. However it can also include many other forms of loss whether including the end of a personal relationship or reduced physical ability. In each case the event can result in a tremendous sense of longing for what has been lost and require a period of adjustment which can sometimes take a long time and usually requires bereavement counselling. The feelings associated with bereavement can include overriding feelings of emptiness and numbness to feelings of intense pain, guilt and anger.
Although the experience of transition through the grieving process is always going to be unique what would nearly always seem to be true is the need for time with the adjustment process. This adjustment allows the healing to take place, to come to understand what the loss means and to work out how to live our lives once the bereavement as been accepted.
This is where executive coaching and bereavement counselling can help with the adjustment. People experiencing bereavement often find that they don’t know how to go on with their lives or might even have thoughts that they don’t want to go on with their lives at all. In these circumstances taking the time to talk to someone, having some bereavement counselling, to reflect on the loss and find a way forward can have a very positive and transformational effect in relatively short amount of time.
